| While the Free Kuwait Campaign was being waged, the Iraqi army was systematically pillaging and vandalizing Kuwaiti homes, businesses, and cultural and governmental institutions. This official destruction was perpetrated to deflate the morale of Kuwaitis and boost the morale of Iraqi troops by augmenting their military pay with booty. Even worse was the wide-ranging brutality of the Iraqi troops that directly afflicted more than 20,000 people in Kuwait. For more about the invasion’s aftermath, see evidence.org.kw. (Shown above is the International Fair Ground in Mishrif.) | The nation’s infrastructure and economy made a quick miraculous recovery after the travesties wrought by Iraq’s 7-month-long occupation of Kuwait. All traces of the devastation have been swept away and, just as the plumes from the oil fires faded into the atmosphere, memories of the struggle for the nation’s freedom both inside and outside Kuwait have dissolved into the bustle of everyday life.
